Historical Evolution
The Origins
The origin of the house predates the 14th century. The oldest remains have been found in the walls of the room on the first floor, where several frescoes of Saints were discovered under layers of paint and a Holy Supper one which lacks a fragment, probably as a result of a rear extension.
1913-1916
1913. - The owners of the house, the Bofarull sisters, Dolors and Pepita, meet Jujol in La Secuita, where he spends the summer season. They tell him about the state of the house, a manor house that has many shortcomings due to its antiquity and the poor maintenance of the structures. Thus, he is commissioned to reform the beamed gallery of the back façade. Jujol also makes drawings and sketches of the oncoming lookout point tower and he considers the image of the future new façade in the fields.
1914. - Jujol makes several trips to Pallaresos to take data and some details in order to be aware of the needs of the house and design the blueprints relating to its reforms. That same year, the job for the remodelling of the Bofarull house gets started.
1915. - He considers and draws the proposal of a link between the stable and the access to the ground floor house. First images of the main façade come up. Jujol goes on with the remodelling.
1916. - Jujol draws and builds the interior furnishing. He also outlines the proposal of a wall separating the washing place and the street gardens and the gateway to the oil press. The remodelling of the lookout point tower and the staircase is finished.
1917-1920
1917. – Jujol draws the proposal of an improvement and rearranging of the garden, building planters, a fountain in the shape of a dragon and some seats on the wall of the house. He elaborates the details regarding the figure of the angel. The remodelling jobs are resumed. Designs and construction of interior furnishings: interior doors, stained glass, desktop furniture. He also paints the four seasons of the year on the wall of the gallery on the first floor, with reference to the rural work. The internal access connecting the stable and the gateway is built. The pergola, located above the sinks, is also constructed. He draws the details of the archivolts of the gateway to the house. He builds the entrance door. He designs and draws the landlords’ house, located above the winery.
1918. - Jujol draws some perspectives, while making the assembly of the guardian angel on the roof of the lookout tower.
1919. – He rectifies and enlarges the windows of the attic floor and those in the bedroom on the first floor of the main façade.
1920. - In the winter kitchen of the ground floor, he draws the details of the sink and the ‘trencadissos’ made of ceramic (brittle mosaics). The remodelling of the house is stopped.
1927-1933
1927. - Begins the second phase of the remodelling with the design of the landlords’ building and the warehouse.
1931. – We find the final image of the main façade. The small window above the entrance door is built. The outside bench of the main façade is drawn and built. He also outlines the details of the doors and the gates of the attic floor.
1933. – He draws the details of the asphalt in the entrance and, finally, Jujol’s contributions in Casa Bofarull get to an end.
1937-1954
1937. – The wings of the angel St. Gabriel are disassembled as it was a religious representation symbol and, consequently, it was a danger to those who lived in the house during the Civil War. Thus, the angel starts symbolizing a warrior and stops being used as a weather-vane.
1945. - Dolores Bofarull, owner, passes away.
1954. - Josefa Bofarull, owner, passes away and the house remains closed.
1992-2013
1992. – The remodelling of the pillars in the balcony on the façade in front of the fields is designed.
2000. – Some reconstruction jobs are done for the pottery handrail located over the balcony, the tanks framing the balcony are emptied because they cause the loss of the paintings on the façade. The restoration of the angel gets started with the cleaning of its swivel mechanism and the reinstatement of its wings so that it becomes a weather-vane again.
2004. – The ceiling of the gallery is restored and it undergoes a general maintenance.
2013. – 100 years after Jujol’s incorporation in Casa Bofarull, the current owners start the project of opening the Casa Bofarull doors to the general public.
